The Vuvuzela Debate

I have been to the SAFA Forum and am shocked at the level of the debate. Insults, racism, misconceptions, stereotyping! It is all there. Where is the compromise, intelligent discussion that we need. The same can be said for the debate on Facebook.

We should try to get this thing into prespective. Some want to blow Vuvuzelas and love the noise while watching the soccer, others cannot stand the noise but also want to watch the soccer!!! So what do we do now? Can’t we have some stands for the Vuvuzela blowers and some for those who just want to watch? We are expecting thousands of overseas visitors next year who should be given a choice. The World Cup is for everyone, not just the Vuvuzela blowers. Maybe they should only be allowed at games where SA plays. The other soccer teams playing should also have some say in whether there should be Vuvuzelas or not at their games. Has anyone consulted Bafana Bafana on this one?

  1. I went to the Italy/Brazil game last night and this fellow with a very large vuvuzela kept blowing the thing very loudly less than a meter from my ear. Much as I’d like to tell you that I’m considerate and understanding, this blasting in my ear made conversation with my friends impossible and left me partially deaf for a couple of hours.
I would like to propose a compromise to this issue. These vuvuzelas are very loud particularily in a covered or confined space, so how about if they are allowed in the open or upper stands I.E. the cheap seats and banned in the lower or more expensive seats. The hospitality suits can make their own rules as they please.

  2. I think the noise adds a lot too the game. I really think that it does, but I also hear your points and I think that compromise is the only way. I like the idea of designated stands of r the Vuvu, but to say that it should only be allowed in the ‘cheap’ seats is a bit unfair.

  3. The thing is South Africa actually has great football songs and does not need the plastic horn:

  9. OK, the vuvuzela is not only a South African traditition but an African tradition. It is a sound loved by all AFRICAN’s. It doesn’t have to be loved by the Western Europeans that only watch the english Premier league and other english soccer leagues, but they are aloud to blow their little horns from a can and did any one complain about those. NO. This is African Soccer being played at an African country. This is where the Western European people will be suffering with the African Trumpet. Listen if you can’t beat them, join them go out and buy yourself a vuvuzela and I’ll gladly teach you how to play it. I salute to you Mr Blatter for not banning the vuvuzela because of uneasy people from Western Europe. If you don’t want that “annoying sound” next to you then don’t go to the games at all.

  13. I am ashamed if people from other countries say that the vuvuzela is a South African culture thing. This idiotic horn has nothing to do with the South Africa culture. It might the the culture of the stupid brain dead people in SOuth Africa but not the culture of everybody in our country. Please ban this idiotic instrument from the games.
